Michelle Obama is “feeling sick” after being punched and pushed by an unidentified intruder in a Washington, D.C., home she was renting, her husband has told ABC News.
In a series of tweets, the Obamas say they are “heartbroken” over the alleged assault and call for law enforcement to help.
The incident happened Tuesday afternoon, just hours after President Obama was set to travel to Puerto Rico to visit the island and the president’s brother, Sasha, was set for a fundraiser.
“Michelle Obama and I are heartbroken by this disturbing and troubling incident,” President Obama wrote.
“I urge the people of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to continue to pray for those injured and the families of those who died as a result of this attack.”
The Obamas’ statement also includes an emotional plea to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
“We have been overwhelmed by the support and kindness of everyone who has helped us through this difficult time.
We pray for your safety and we ask that you continue to keep us posted on any developments,” the president wrote.
